“There’s more to life than training, but training is what puts more in your life.” — Brooks Kubik
This quote resonates deeply with me because it perfectly encapsulates what I’ve learned through years of focusing on health, strength, and confidence—not just in my body, but in every aspect of my life. Training isn’t just about exercise or fitness. It’s a metaphor for the discipline, resilience, and focus we need to show up as the best version of ourselves.
When I first began my health journey, I thought it was about one thing: losing weight. Like so many, I believed the physical transformation would automatically fix everything else. But the truth is, my journey didn’t just change the way I looked. It changed the way I lived.
Training became a cornerstone in my life. It was no longer just about what I was doing at the gym. It became about the lessons I was learning along the way—the power of persistence, the importance of showing up, and the value of committing to something greater than myself.
How Training Changed My Life
I vividly remember the moment that set me on this path. Years ago, I was 130 pounds overweight and prediabetic. A simple trip to an amusement park became a life-changing event. I couldn’t fit on a ride, and in that moment, I realized the weight I was carrying wasn’t just physical—it was emotional and mental, too.
That experience forced me to take a hard look at my habits, my health, and my life. It wasn’t just about dropping the pounds; it was about uncovering why I had let my health spiral out of control. And it wasn’t until I started to prioritize training—both physically and mentally—that I began to see real change.
Training taught me discipline. It forced me to commit to myself in a way I never had before. Every time I laced up my shoes or stepped into the gym, I was proving to myself that I was capable of doing hard things.
Training also taught me resilience. There were countless times I felt like giving up—when progress seemed slow, or life got in the way. But every time I pushed through, I came out stronger on the other side. Most importantly, training gave me confidence. It showed me that I could rely on myself, trust in my abilities, and rise to challenges—whether in the gym, at work, or in life.
Training Is More Than Physical
What I’ve come to understand is that training isn’t just about physical fitness. It’s about preparing yourself for the life you want to live.
As a former corporate leader turned executive lifestyle coach and NBHWC Certified, I’ve seen how these lessons apply far beyond the gym. Health is the foundation for everything. When you feel strong in your body, you’re better equipped to handle stress, lead with clarity, and show up for the people and things that matter most.
That’s why my mantra, Be Healthy. Be Strong. Be Confident®, is at the heart of everything I do. It’s a reminder that health isn’t just about what you weigh or how you look. It’s about building the strength to face challenges, the confidence to step into your potential, and the resilience to keep going when things get tough.
What Puts More in Your Life?
Training may not be your thing, and that’s okay. But the question I want to leave you with is this: What puts more in your life?
For me, it’s training. It’s the commitment to consistently show up for myself, even when it’s hard. It’s the discipline to prioritize my health and well-being so I can live vibrantly and fully.
For you, it might be something else—maybe it’s carving out time for mindfulness, pursuing a passion project, or simply learning to say no so you can say yes to yourself.
The key is to find what fills your cup and gives you the strength to keep moving forward.
