How many times have you told yourself, I have to start over? Maybe life threw you a curveball, disrupted your momentum, and suddenly, everything you worked for seemed to slip through your fingers. I’ve been there—more times than I can count. But here’s what I’ve learned: You are never truly starting over. You are just continuing.
Life Will Interrupt Your Journey—It’s Inevitable
I’ve faced seasons in my life where I felt like I lost everything. I spent years building my health, my strength, my confidence—only to watch it waver when life demanded my attention elsewhere. Whether it was caring for my aging parents, navigating grief, or facing career shifts, I found myself standing at a crossroads more than once, feeling like all my progress had been erased.
But was it really erased? No.
Even when I couldn’t physically train the way I wanted, even when my focus had to be on others instead of myself, I wasn’t back at square one. The knowledge I gained, the habits I built, the resilience I cultivated—those things never left me. I wasn’t starting over. I was continuing from where I was, with the wisdom of experience guiding me forward.
Reframing the Narrative
We often beat ourselves up when life disrupts our rhythm. We tell ourselves we failed, that we lost all our progress, that we should have done better. But what if we changed the narrative?
Instead of saying, I have to start over, what if you said:
I’m picking up where I left off, with new wisdom.
I’m adjusting based on what I’ve learned.
I’m moving forward with strength, even if it looks different than before.
There is no rule that says progress has to be linear. Growth is messy. Healing is unpredictable. Success ebbs and flows. But as long as you keep going, you are still on the path.
Embrace the Adjustment Phase
When I returned to focused training after life’s detours, I had to let go of the idea that I’d instantly be where I was before. I had to give myself grace, adjust my expectations, and honor the new version of me that had emerged through life’s challenges.
That’s what true resilience looks like—not perfection, not an unbroken streak of success, but the ability to adapt, shift, and keep moving forward.
So if you’re feeling like you’ve fallen behind, like you have to “start over” because life pulled you in another direction—pause. Recognize that you are not back at zero. Every step, every lesson, every challenge has shaped you. You are continuing, not beginning again. Your journey is still unfolding—just keep going.
I’d love to hear from you—have you ever felt like you had to start over? How did you reframe it?
